In 1966 the BEATLES embarked on their last tour, playing concerts in 20 cities over the course of four months, beginning in London and ending in San Francisco. Millions of fans in England, Germany, Japan, the Philippines and America flocked to see the band.
HELLO, GOODBYE – THE BEATLES IN TOKYO, 1966 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the BEATLES‘ 1966 Tokyo concerts, a limited edition of rare photos of the trip. Taken by Japanese photographer Shimpei Asai, these pictures have never before been published outside Japan. They offer an intimate portrait of the BEATLES in their first trip to the country, capturing their time on and off stage.
They intimately capture a fleeting moment, with all its controversy, Beatlemania and creativity, painting a poignant image of the band during their short but intense visit to Tokyo.

50 Jahre nachdem die BEATLES am Donnerstag 30. Juni ein Konzert, am Freitag 1. und Samstag 2. Juli 1966 jeweils zwei Konzerte in Tokio gaben, veröffentlichen „Genesis Publications“ nun ein Buch mit Fotos der BEATLES auf diesen Konzerten. HELLO, GOODBYE – THE BEATLES IN TOKYO, 1966 ist limitiert und beinhaltet seltene Fotos des Fotografen Shimpei Asai, die niemals zuvor außerhalb Japans veröffentlicht worden sein sollen.
Die BEATLES kommen am Mittwoch, den 29. Juni 1966, in Tokio an. Für ihre fünf Shows ist das legendäre Nippon Budokan gebucht, was zu heftigen Kontroversen führt. Denn dieser Veranstaltungsort war bisher nur für traditionelle japanische Unterhaltung gedacht und wurde ursprünglich gebaut, um der gefallenen japanischen Soldaten zu gedenken.
Derweil bemüht sich die Band, mit den an die gestellten Forderungen zurechtzukommen. Sie sind nur noch zwei Monate bis zu ihrem letzten öffentlichen Konzert im Candlestick Park in San Fransisco, USA.
Vielleicht scheinen die BEATLES auch deshalb ziemlich entspannt zu sein, was auch auf den Fotos zu sehen ist. Asai soll der einzige japanische Fotograf sein, dem damals der Zutritt zu den BEATLES gewährt wurde. Die Fotos vermitteln ein intimes Portrait der BEATLES auf ihrem ersten Trip nach Japan – vor und hinter den Kulissen. Auch ist festgehalten, wie sie sich entspannen; die BEATLES sind in Noh-Theater-Masken zu sehen und wie sie Kotos (japanisches Saiteninstrument) in Kimonos spielen. Das englische Magazin „Mojo“ jubelt vorab: „A lush new Genesis tome“ („Ein großartiger neuer Genesis-Band“).
