THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE BBC – von Jan Jansen
In TV und Presse als Sensation angekündigt (Zitat: „Nach 24 Jahren erstmals neue BEATLES-Aufnahmen!“) erschien am 30. November 1994 das Doppel-Album The Beatles live at the BBC. Laut Zeitungsmeldung sollen Sammler in England schon vor Mitternacht vor den Plattenläden Londons gewartet haben um eines der ersten Exemplare zu ergattern. Meldungen dieser Art trugen auf jeden Fall dazu bei, daß das neu BEATLES-Album in aller Munde war. Doch kaum etwas ist an den Aufnahmen für Sammler wirklich neu. Die meisten Stücke kennt man dann doch von den umfassenden Bootleg-Serien Beatles at the Beeb bzw. Radio Active. Natürlich hat man die Stücke auf dem neuen Album in weitaus besser Tonqualität vorliegen als auf den Bootleg-Veröffentlichungen.
Das mit einer gelungenen Titelauswahl zusammengestellte Album bietet insbesondere für den „normalen“ BEATLES-Hörer einen schönen Überblick über die musikalischen Aktivitäten der BEATLES bei der BBC – und eine Sammlung bisher offiziell nicht erhältlicher Stücke: 28 Cover-Versionen und eine Lennon/McCartney-Komposition.
Man hat bei der Produktion glücklicherweise nicht versucht einen Stereo-Klang zu erzeugen sondern hat die Aufnahmen im historischen Mono belassen. Die Produktion und Zusammenstellung des Albums sowie das Re-Mastering der Tracks übernahm GEORGE MARTIN, eine Einleitung schrieb DEREK TAYLOR. und die Sleeve-Notes steuerte KEVIN HOWLETT (BBC-Produzent) bei.
Das gesamte Album-Design schien eher für die CD konzipiert worden zu sein. Befinden sich die Informationen zu den Tracks und die Fotos bei der CD in einem nett gestaltetem Booklet, so hat man bei der LP die Fotos einfach recht einfallslos in ein und derselben Größe auf den Innen-Cover gedruckt. Außerdem kann auf den LP-Labels den Hinweis „See booklet for details“ finden. Die Informationen zur Doppel-LP befinden sich aber nicht in einem Booklet sondern auf den Innencovern.
